Elche – Alicante – Costa Blanca

What to See and Visit in the City of Palm Trees 🌴

Elche is one of the most unique destinations on the Costa Blanca. Located just 25 minutes from Alicante, the city blends over two thousand years of history with lush urban nature and cultural traditions found nowhere else in Europe. It is not simply a nearby excursion — Elche is a complete cultural destination, ideal for a half-day trip or a full-day experience during your Costa Blanca holiday.

🌴 Elche Palm Grove — UNESCO World Heritage Site

The most iconic symbol of the city is the Elche Palm Grove (Palmeral de Elche), declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the largest palm grove in Europe, with more than 200,000 palm trees surrounding the historic centre.

One of the best places to experience it is Huerto del Cura Garden, a historic botanical garden where visitors can stroll among date palms, cactus collections and peaceful ponds. Here you will find the famous Imperial Palm, planted in the 18th century and considered one of the most remarkable palm trees in the world.

Practical tip: The palm gardens offer shade almost all year round, making Elche an excellent destination even during the summer months on the Costa Blanca.

🏛️ Basilica of Santa María and the Misteri d’Elx

In the heart of the historic centre stands the Basilica of Santa María, the most important monument in the city.

Every August, this basilica hosts the Misteri d’Elx, a medieval sacred drama that has been recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The performance recreates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and has been staged in Elche for more than 500 years.

Even if you are not visiting during the festival, climbing the bell tower of Santa María is highly recommended. From the top you will enjoy one of the best panoramic views of the palm grove and the historic old town.

🏺 Archaeological Museum and the Lady of Elche

The MAHE – Archaeological and History Museum of Elche, located inside the historic Altamira Palace, explains why the city has more than 2,000 years of history.

The museum presents the Iberian and Roman origins of Elche and displays an official replica of the famous Lady of Elche, one of the most important archaeological icons in Spain.

It is a relatively short visit (around one hour) but highly recommended to understand the cultural heritage of the city.

🍽️ Traditional Gastronomy You Should Try

Elche is also known for its distinctive Mediterranean cuisine. When visiting the city, do not miss these local specialties:

  • Arroz con costra — the most traditional rice dish of Elche
  • Fresh dates from the palm grove
  • Granada Mollar de Elche — a sweet pomegranate with protected designation of origin
  • Toña ilicitana — a typical local sweet pastry

Many restaurants in the historic centre offer local lunch menus where you can taste authentic Elche cuisine.
