If you’re looking for a unique, magical experience steeped in history this summer, don’t miss the Mystery of Elche 2025. 🌟 This jewel of medieval theatre shines once again in the city of Elche (Alicante) from August 11 to 15, in a very special edition that coincides with the Jubilee Year for the 75th anniversary of the dogma of the Assumption.
What is Misteri d’Elx (Mistery of Elche)? 🤔
The Misteri d’Elx is a sacred-lyrical play that narrates the Dormition, Assumption, and Coronation of the Virgin Mary. It is performed annually in the Basilica of Santa María and is the only medieval play of its kind that has been performed uninterruptedly since the 15th century. For this reason, it was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001. 🌍

Key dates to experience in 2025 📅
This year, the events begin on August 11th with dress rehearsals, which are repeated on August 12th and 13th. On August 14th, La Vespra, the first part of the Mystery, is celebrated, and in the evening, the moving Nit de la Roà, a popular candlelit vigil, takes place. 🔥
On August 15th, after the morning procession of the Virgin, the climax arrives: La Festa, the second and final part of the play, where the Virgin ascends to heaven amidst songs, angels, and raw emotions.

- August 11 and 12, 10:30 p.m. – Dress rehearsal (admission required).
- August 12, 10:30 p.m. – Dress rehearsal (admission required).

- August 14, 6:00 p.m. – La Vespra, or the first part of the Misteri d’Elx (free admission).
- August 15, 10:00 a.m. – Burial procession of the Virgin through the city streets.
- August 15, 6:00 p.m. – La Festa, or the second part of the Misteri d’Elx (free admission).

A staging that will leave you breathless 😲
The interior of the Basilica is transformed into a heavenly theater. Angels descend from the top of the temple with centuries-old special effects, while Gregorian chant and sacred music envelop you. Everything is performed in ancient Valencian and Latin, and all the characters are men!, as medieval tradition dictates.
Side Activities and Festive Atmosphere 🎉
Elche dresses up for the occasion. You can enjoy exhibitions, window display competitions, guided tours, and a city filled with palm trees and Mediterranean charm. 🌴 Plus, on August 13th, the spectacular Nit de l’Albà lights up the sky with thousands of fireworks, culminating in the famous Palm Tree of the Virgin, launched from the bell tower. 🎆

The acts of La Vespra and La Festa (14 and 15 of August) are free. For the general rehearsals (11, 12 and 13 of August), you can buy TICKETS on Visit Elche. There is also a raffle for tickets for registered residents on August 1st.
